while driving up to vermont this weekend, my mother and i stopped at the martindale diner for lunch; that's where we picked the lilacs. up in stockbridge, we stopped to pee at the red lion inn; i found the bird and a pair of beeswax tapers at the country store up the street. the book is erik larson's the devil in the white city , which i'd heard good things about, but hadn't yet read. i'd been jonesing for a book i could sink my teeth into, and when i started this late last week, i was hooked within the first few pages. i LOVE when that happens. it's like catching someone's eye in a restaurant or on the street, and connecting instantly. nothing needs to come of it, but the connection is enough. i feel that way about books. there are so many out there, but every once in a while you find one that fills you with a frisson of the danger of possibility, and it feels like love at first s.
