"Obon or just Bon, also referred to as Day of the Dead, is a Japanese Buddhist custom to honor the departed (deceased) spirits of one's ancestors. This Buddhist custom has evolved into a family reunion holiday during which people return to ancestral family places and visit and clean their ancestors' graves, and when the spirits of ancestors are supposed to revisit the household altars. Also called the Feast of Lanterns, it has been celebrated in Japan for more than 500 years." (from Wikipedia) This lantern is in my mother's house, and is supposed to function as a beacon fire for spirits coming back home..

this was the light to light us to sleep
I didn't sleep much at all that night. I was the last person in and then I was up again when the dogs started barking (around 4 in the morning - although pretty much everyone woke up then too). I couldn't stay in the dorm, so I wandered around watching the stars go out and listening to pigs snuggle around in the stubble of the adjacent field. I walked down to the river when it was light enough and it was truly an amazing morning..
