Minor Basilica of St. Lorenzo Ruiz aka Binondo Church Canonized in 1987, Lorenzo Ruiz is the first Filipino Roman Catholic saint. A Chinese mestizo (his father was Chinese and his mother was Filipino), he was tortured and martyred in Japan in 1637. The church facade and belltower, over 400 years old, were the only remnants from the original structure. The rest was destroyed in World War II as the Americans liberated Manila from the Japanese. As a result the rest of it is only about 60 years old, with the murals inside even younger than that..

A Votive in the Dark Cathedral
I love a scary cathedral. They can put you in such a melancholy and gloomy mood if you want them too. You can feel the overbearing saints from above judging your moves, and giving you a few bonus points in the big game if you light one of the votives. In a scientific study, it was proven than a votive makes a prayer 35% more likely to be granted. from the blog at www.stuckincustoms.com.
Encienda una vela para mí.
Votive candles at the Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción (Cathedral of the Virgin of the Assumption) in Oaxaca de Juarez, Oaxaca, Mexico. Situated at the northern end of the Zocalo, the Cathedral encompasses an entire city block. Construction of the church began in 1702 and it was consecrated in 1733. Earthquakes have severely damaged the structure over the years, which has led to major renovations and repairs. You can see a panoramic photo of the Cathedral and Zocolo here ..

Votive Candles
When you enter a Catholic church, you might see a shrine, small side chapels or side altars with statues or icons and rows of votive candles. The word "votive" comes from the Latin "votum" meaning "vow," and these candles (which aren't blessed) are, when lit, used to symbolize our prayers, vows of prayer, or simply our honoring God or one of His Saints. -- www.fisheaters.com/fire.html.
