Tonight on the news I saw a piece about the Persian New Year on the 21st ( Norouz ), which is preceded by Chahârshanbe Sûrî or the festival of fire on the night before the last Wednesday of the year (tonight). Traditionally this is celebrated by jumping over a campfire which symbolizes the leaving behind of one's 'bad juju', or the light winning out over the darkness.
