bon
it's been a rough week in boston. someone i know employed a bridge in her suicide earlier this week, and then this morning a friend of many (though i didn't know him personally) broke his neck in a scooter accident. i'd been meaning to go to the bon festival anyway, since i think it's a beautiful way to honor my pop, my grandpa, and various friends who i've lost, but this week it was just plain necessary. if there's one of these in your area, i suggest it. beautiful and therapeutic. they had showa students (an exchange program from japan) volunteering to paint characters on the rice paper sheaths, but they only had four options: Hope, Love, Eternal LIfe, and Peace. sad that 'peace' is such a cliche term in our time. seems to have lost its power. but looking at the other options, it seemed the most pertinent. old age, alcoholism, suicide, accidents... friends, family, familiar stra.

Bon Odori lanterns
on Capitol Lake, Olympia, Washington, USA - 18 August 2007 Bon Odori is a Japanese Buddhist holiday to honor the departed (deceased) spirits of one's ancestors. This Buddhist festival has evolved into a family reunion holiday during which people from the big cities return to their home towns and visit and clean their ancestors' graves. Traditionally including a dance festival, it has existed in Japan for more than 500 years. (wikipedia) The floating of paper lanterns to guide the spirits in their journey is called Toro Nagashi. This is Flickr's most interesting photo tagged Toro Nagashi..

Happy Halloween Season Flickr!
Tonight we had our annual pumpkin carving and scary movie night, always so much fun! These were the results...well, that and full stomachs and fear of the dark from old school horror movies! This was taken with my dad's incredible new Nikon D80 DSLR...I am so vry, VERY jealous of him buying it! It was like I had died and gone to a photographic paradise when taking a few photos with the thing! So, whose is whose? Well, from left to right you have my younger brother Adam's, my younger sister Danielle's, my dad Tom's, and then mine on the far left. We were all fairly impressed with the results! This one is DEFINITELY BEST VIEWED LARGE, as the resolution is so high and yet so crystal clear!.
